Sony Hacked Again? Not.
Today the website used to reset PSN passwords was taken down. The mainstream media misinterpreted the initial report and assumed the server was taken down due to hackers. Worse some even had horribly inaccurate titles. Check this out. It's a story that claims PSN sign in was unavailable. I've been able to sign into PSN with no issues. The story was put out by one of the powerhouse internet media outlets. The irony is it was more the technical side of this media giant that ran the story with bad info. One created to allow executives to make better technology decisions. One of the networks that used to be under the banner of this giant is the ever beloved and evenly hated G4.
Anyway I'm going to tell you exactly what happened with regards to the whole Sony was attacked again today shebang.
Some hacker somewhere posted the exploit. Sony fresh from their last data breach nightmare, immediately took action. Sony pulled their servers to fix the hole. As much crap as I give them, I appreciate it. It's about damn time! Maybe the articles posted regarding their laughable server security helped…. Particularly in their web servers and database tables. Overall I'm glad they took down the servers and immediately went to addressing the issue.
This is not the same Sony of a month ago. I give MAD props to their IT, IT Sec, and Web departments. Thank you for all the hard work. If there's one thing a seasoned IT guys know, it's stress. They worked well under pressure and are currently working to fix an exploit which could have resulted in countless stolen accounts. All in all it's a happy ending right?
No the masses are infuriated and angry at the hackers. Now let's get it out there now. There was no mass theft of PSN accounts. Would have been if Sony wouldn't have responded swiftly. The hole would have allowed hackers to change your password without knowing your shiny new one. So if anything the hacker that brought it forward saved many people from being victims of PSN account lifting. Thanks hacker and thanks Sony for the super swift response. That's a great step in the right direction for earning back consumers trust. Now let's have some fun. I'm going to quote some hilarious quotes from blogs and boards on other sites:
