PSN Blues
Most would assume that all is well in the digital playground that is PSN. Most would be wrong. Actually I'm surprised this hasn't been covered by any other VG media outlets. Oh well, just lets the GT crew break another story. You may be asking WTF am I talking about. Read on and all will be clear.
So my son wanted to play the UC3 Beta with me via split screen. I went to log in his PSN account and received an error msg. Ok standard fare. All I needed to do was follow a link sent to the the e-mail address associated with my sons account. You know reset the password because I had neglected to do so initially. I had the same problem with my wife's account previously. Apparently if you waited too long the password reset via PS3 Is no longer an option. The problem starts with the lack of an e-mail from Sony to my sons account. No problem, I just need to reset the password via the PlayStation website. Or so you would think. Once again the password reset server is down. Don't believe me? Here's a screenshot of what's displayed when you attempt to reset a password. It's been like that since Monday…
As previously mentioned I had used the site to reset my wife's account AFTER the exploit was exposed and the site pulled to fix it. Now it's down again and this time there's no official word from Sony. Now I'd be a little less ranty if news hadn't leaked of Sony pulling the old contradictory backpedal. Oh yes. To further add to my aggravation Sony has a new PSN Pass program in the works. Leaked box art for Resistance 3 shows the PSN Pass logo. Any gamer worth their salt should recall the recent criticism EA suffered for implementing the EA Online Pass.
Now what these "online passes" essentially equate to is paying to play online if you buy used games, or have multiple PSN and/or XBL accounts. The industry has moved in this direction to attempt to dissuade gamers from buying used titles. I can understand their motives but don't agree with the approach. Personally I don't trade in games I'm a collector. Additionally I don't buy used. I want my money to go to the people that actually worked their butts off and made sacrifices to bring the quality titles we love to the market. I understand some folks financial situation may force them to buy all used games. No ill will, I feel ya. I once was there and don't look down on others that do purchase used.
However it's annoying that I have to spend an extra $10 if I want any other members of my family to be able to play "online Pass" games. As someone that intentionally buys new, I feel I shouldn't be punished for other folks buying habits. Sony choosing to go this route is bull shhh. For a company that has repeatedly touted their free online services it's ridiculous that they pull an about face. No longer is it free to play online on PSN. Sony can't control 3rd parties, but to follow suit just spits in the face of PSN supporters and user's. Looks like I'm going to have to purchase a "pass" if I want my son to be able to play Resistance 3 online. That's assuming we will one day be able reset his password. I'm highly disappointed in Sony and their decision to pursue the "Online Pass" model. Keep checking GT for future updates as they develop. Sound off on your favorite social media outlets. Let Sony know PSN user's won't stand for this malarkey!
